WHAT IS SOMATIC THERAPY?

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-orientated approach that provides clinical tools to resolve symptoms of stress, shock, and trauma that accumulate in our bodies. When we are stuck in patterns of fight, flight, freeze or fawn, SE helps us release, recover, and become more resilient. The large majority of people worldwide have traumatic experiences in their lifetime, which can have major impacts on their health and well-being. Rates of trauma exposure are estimated to be anywhere from 60-100% in the general population. This supports Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and emotional and early developmental attachment trauma. SE creates hope and possibility for the expansive human potential for healing and resilience

VIDEO 1: What is Somatic Therapy (6min):
Dr. Peter Levine uses his “Slinky” to demonstrate the effects of trauma on the nervous system, and his philosophy of treating trauma, which involves slowly releasing (or titrating) this compressed fight-or-flight energy a bit at a time to give the individual the ability to reintegrate it back into the nervous system.
VIDEO 2: What is pendulation? (3:36mins)
We all have a natural rhythms of expansion and contraction (like the breath) in our body. When we come across trauma, this gets thwarted- the natural rhythm gets stuck.
When we start to turn inwards to feel where our stress contractions are and befriend them, organically our body will move toward expansion.
VIDEO 3: What is the felt sense? (5:06mins)
The client’s ability to reference their conflicts, issues, beliefs in their body (through physical sensations) is the NUMBER 1 indicator for SUCCESSFUL TRANSFORMATION and is a direct link to CREATIVITY.
VIDEO 4:  Understanding your Nervous System, to relieve trauma symptoms (27:33mins).
In this video, you will learn about the physiological basis of trauma and how Somatic Experiencing® (SE™), developed by Peter A. Levine, PhD, helps distressed individuals recover a sense of well being, stability and vitality.
